Chemistry Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

The minor in chemistry is designed for the student who desires to broaden their primary bachelor’s degree with an additional emphasis in chemistry.  A graduate with a minor in chemistry has considerable knowledge in chemistry beyond entry-level courses.  All students not majoring in chemistry can earn a minor in chemistry.

Chemistry Minor Requirements

  • (4) Credit Hours
  • At least fifteen (15) credits in chemistry after CHEM 1211K  and CHEM 1212K  are required, although more is allowed.
  • Organic Chemistry II (CHEM 2212K  ) is optional.
  • Nine (9) or more credits in courses with a CHEM prefix at the 3000/4000 level.
  • At least one course must be a lab (which has the course number followed by a “K”) or be an integrated lab course (CHEM 4701 ,CHEM 4702  )
  • Biochemistry (BCHM 3100K  and/or BCHM 4100K  ) may count.
  • Undergraduate Research Project (STEC 4500  ), Intro to Undergraduate Research (STEC 2500  ) and Chemistry Internship (CHEM 4800  ) may NOT count.
  • Note:

Duplicated credit rule:  Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 2211K  and CHEM 2212K  )can count as duplicate credit toward both the minor in chemistry and toward the student’s other degree or program at GGC.  Once course in the minor at the 3000/4000 level must be unique to the minor and not already be required/selected course in the major.  This course would count in the elective area of that major.

All students minoring in chemistry, including non-science majors must take Principles of Chemistry I and II (CHEM 1211K  and CHEM 1212K  ) for Area D.  A student majoring in a field outside of the School of Science and Technology must choose those courses for Area D and not a different course sequence.  Students are responsible for meeting all prerequisite requirements for the chemistry courses that they choose to take for a chemistry minor.  A minimum grade of “C” or better must be earned in all of the courses.
