I. Purpose and Policy Statement

All USG institutions shall give instruction in the history of the United States, in the history of Georgia, and in the essentials of the United States Constitution and the Constitution of Georgia. No undergraduate student shall receive a certificate of graduation or a degree without successfully completing coursework or passing a satisfactory examination on the history of the United States, the history of Georgia, and the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution and the Constitution of Georgia (Board of Regents Policy Manual Section 3.3.4.)

II. Scope

Students, as well as faculty and staff advisors, should access this policy to be familiar with Georgia Gwinnett College’s (“GGC”) United States and Georgia History and Constitutions requirements. 

III. Compliance

1. Students may satisfy the History Legislative requirements by one of the following:
   1. Complete a course in United States History. 
   2. Complete the Georgia History Test for students who transfer in U.S. History from another college or university.
   3. Complete U.S. History at Georgia Gwinnett College or another approved USG institution.
2. Students may satisfy the Constitution Legislative requirements by one of the following:
   1. Complete a course in American Government
   2. Complete the Georgia Constitution Test for students who transfer in American Government from another college or university
   3. Complete American Government at Georgia Gwinnett College or another approved USG institution.
3. Students who receive credit through AP or CLEP for U.S. History or American Government will be exempted from taking the General Education Area E required history and political science courses.  However, these students will be required to complete the Georgia portion of the test with a passing score.
4. Students may take either test only twice in their academic career, and not more than once per semester. If a student fails a test twice, they MUST take an additional course that meets the legislative requirement.
5. Alternatives to Taking Test: Students may take history or political science courses at Georgia Gwinnett College that meet the legislative requirement. These courses currently include the US History survey courses (HIST 2111 and HIST 2112), Georgia History (HIST 3265) and American Government (POLS 1101).
