Global Studies Certification

I. Purpose and Policy Statement

This policy provides admission requirements and completion requirements for the Global Studies Certification program. Oversight for this program falls under the Internationalization Committee.

II. Scope

The policy applies to all students interested in the Global Studies Certification program. All GGC faculty, academic deans, academic advisrs, and the Internationalization Committee members must also be familiar with the policy.

III. Compliance
  1. Global Studies Certification Admission Requirements. To be accepted into the Global Studies Certification Program, a student must:
    1. Possess a 2.7 Cumulative GPA;
    2. Have completed 24 hours of academic credit (with at least 12 hours completed at GGC); and,
    3. Complete/sign the Certification Agreement (available in the Office of Internationalization).
  2. Global Studies Certification Program Completion Requirements. To complete the Global Studies Certification program, a student must:
    1. Complete at least six (6) hours in i-courses at the 3000 or 4000 level at GGC with a grade of “C” or better.
    2. Complete the Global Studies Certification Capstone Course with at a grade of “C” or better. NOTE: Pre-registration for the Certification Capstone Course signals the completion of all other certification requirements.
    3. Complete either of the following:
      1. Complete a credit-bearing education abroad or education away program or a credit-bearing course offered in an international location; earn a grade of “C” or better and a minimum of 3 credit hours for the experience; OR
      2. Participate in eight (8) internationally focused events approved by GGC and, for each event, submit a reflection paper.
    4. Satisfy the foreign language requirement by demonstrating proficiency in at least one language other than the student’s native language. The foreign language requirement for the Global Studies Certification can be satisfied in any of the following manners:
      1. Two Courses at GGC: Completes two GGC courses at any level (in the same language) in Chinese, French, or Spanish with a grade of “C” or better.
      2. Transfer Courses in Foreign Languages: Transfers into GGC with two courses at any level (in the same foreign language) in any USG-recognized modern foreign language with a grade of “C” or better.
      3. AP or IB Credit: Completes Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations and scores at the recommended level, he/she will receive academic credit in those circumstances and subsequently satisfy the Certification’s proficiency requirement.
