BIOL 1107K - Principles of Biology I and Laboratory (4) Credit Hours Prerequisite: CHEM 1211K concurrently, or CHEM 1151K and CHEM 1152K completed with a grade of “C” or better and ACT MATH >= 24 or SAT MATH >=470 or ACCNGM >=266 or ACCM>= 79 or MATH 1111 or MATH 1113 or MATH 2200 with a C or better or taken concurrently, or MATH 1111* with a C or better or ACLM >= 60 AND HSGPA 3.1 or ACT English >=17 or SAT Cr. Reading >=430 or (ACCR >=61 and ACCW >=4) ACCNGR >=237 and ACCW>=4) or or ENGL 1101 or ENGL 1101 * or ENGL 1101 ^ or ENGL 1101H with a C or better Co-requisite: CHEM 1211K A study of general biology for science and technology majors including laboratory experience. Upon completion of this course, students will: (1) Apply basic chemical concepts to the understanding of how water and the carbon atom contribute to the fitness and diversity of life. (2) Describe the structure of macromolecules and their functions in organisms (3) Describe the energy production and metabolic pathway (respiration and photosynthesis) of saccharides in plants and animals (4) Differentiate cell structure and function (5) Describe the eukaryotic cell cycle and differentiate between mitosis, meiosis, and binary fission (6) Describe the molecular mechanisms that regulate gene expression from DNA to RNA to protein (7) Apply biological knowledge to real world problems by critically assessing and utilizing scientific information and by understanding of the nature of science.
