CHEM 1212K - Principles of Chemistry II with Laboratory (4) Credit Hours Prerequisite: CHEM 1211K and MATH 1111 This course follows CHEM 1211K and continues building student chemical knowledge, skill and ability through further exploration of chemical and biochemical systems using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Topics covered include solution chemistry, kinetics, acid/base chemistry, chemical equilibrium, reduction and oxidation (redox), chemical thermodynamics and electrochemistry. These topics are revisited in the laboratory, where students further expand their instrumentation and technical knowledge as they collect and analyze scientific data, gathered with modern instrumentation, for real-world questions. Upon completion of the course, the student will: 1) relate the properties of solutions to chemical, biochemical and environmental systems; 2) account for factors that affect the kinetics and dynamics of chemical transformations; 3) analyze chemical equilibria conceptually and computationally; 4) describe and apply the consequences of the fundamental laws of thermodynamics to a variety of systems; 5) identify the role and the importance of acid-base reactions, redox reactions and electrochemistry in chemical contexts; 6) apply constructed lecture and laboratory knowledge to an on-going, campus-wide experimental research project.
