ESSS 4800 - Internship in Environmental Science

(3) Credit Hours
Prerequisite: Junior status and permission of instructor
A pre-approved experiential activity in the field of Environmental Science Studies with meaningful service to the field. The experience should foster academic learning, personal growth and environmental responsibility. Upon completion of this internship, students will: (1) gather accurate information about a possible career path; (2) effectively use methodology associated with the profession such as the scientific method, problem solving in the work environment, or assuming responsible tasks of the profession; (3) communicate in-depth scientific information effectively in oral and written form using appropriate terminology and media; (4) collect and analyze data and interpret results in chart/graph and oral/written form, or (5) any other such tasks related to hands-on experience and industrial practices in the field. The intern shall be no fewer than 120 service hours in the field for 3 credit hours If taken only one semester) and 240 service hours for 6 credit hours (if taken twice in separate semesters) and must be pre-approved by the discipline internship coordinator prior to enrollment.

Course Objectives: By the end of the course student will be able to (1) compose a final report which analyzes how the skills learned during the internship contribute to their environmental science studies and future career goals; and (2) give an oral presentation discussing what the student learned during the course of the internship and how the work contributes to their environmental science studies and future career goals.
