READ 3300A - Concepts and Best Practices for Teaching Reading (3) Credit Hours Prerequisite: Admission to the Education Preparation Program Co-requisite: READ 3300B This course introduces candidates to the concepts and best practices involved in teaching the receptive language arts: reading, listening, and viewing. Candidates learn to use various models for delivering early literacy instruction, including specific strategies for developing phonological awareness, fluency, word recognition, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. The use of literature for beginning readers in a variety of formats and genres is integrated throughout the course. Candidates develop the background needed to develop a comprehensive literacy curriculum for first- and second-language learners which builds upon the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and needs of beginning readers.
