READ 3000 - Foundation of Teaching Reading

(3) Credit Hours
Prerequisite: Admission to the Educator Preparation Program
This course introduces course participants to the concepts and methods needed for best practice in classroom reading instruction. We study the practices involved in the receptive language arts: reading, listening, and viewing. We study first and second language and literacy development. Course participants learn models for delivering literacy instruction including the reading workshop model and teaching strategies for developing phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension for first- and second-language learners. Literature for prekindergarten through Grade 5 readers in a variety of formats and genres are integrated throughout the course.
Course participants will develop the concepts and practices needed to develop a comprehensive reading instruction curriculum for first- and second-language learners that builds upon the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and needs of prekindergarten through Grade 5 readers.
