EXSC 3350 - Community Health and Wellness

(3) Credit Hours
Prerequisite: EXSC 3250   or permission of Instructor
This course serves as an overview of community wellness programs. Students will be exposed to various health issues within community subgroups and the analysis of the interrelationship of the political, social, and economic dimensions of community wellness, as well as cultural diversity issues within domestic and global contexts will be discussed. Specifically, students will: 1) Explain the major responsibilities, contributions, and value of the health education specialist ;2) Identify and review barriers and historical events that have contributed to health disparities; 3) Develop a community needs assessment for multicultural groups (or special needs population) including relevant community resources, cultural impact, and sustainability to meet identified needs; 4) Identify community health resources that address issues of priority populations; 5) Describe various resources that can be utilized in the design, development and implementation of community wellness education efforts taking into account cultural and social diversity; 6) Explain the characteristics of community health organizations, (e.g. non-profit, for-profit), and other types of agencies (e.g. federal, state, local governments) in health promotion; and 7) Research and evaluate health programs that address communities experiencing disproportionate health disparities
