ISCI 2500K - Physics and Earth Sciences with Lab

Prerequisite: MATH 1113   or MATH 2200   with a grade of C or better
This course is designed for students in the School of Science and Technology who are majoring in Biology and are seeking certification in Biology Teacher Certification Program. It does not meet the requirements for other Biology major tracks. This is an Interdisciplinary Science course that gives secondary education students a background in physics and earth sciences, as required by NSTA (National Science Teacher’s Association) and GAPSC (Georgia Professional Standards Commission).  Topics to be covered include: Physics (motion, gravity, energy transformation, waves, electromagnetism, nuclear, quantum, and relativity), Astronomy (origin and structure of the universe and the solar system, observational tools, and conditions for life), Geology (history and composition of Earth, plate tectonics, resources, and weathering), and Climate (the atmosphere, forecasting, and climate change). By the end of the course students will be able to: 1) Demonstrate curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science; 2) Apply the scientific method; 3) Construct and interpret charts, graphs, and tables to draw conclusions; 4) Use computational and estimation skills to analyze data and compose scientific explanations; 5) Collect, present, and analyze scientific data gathered through experiment and literature searches; 6) Communicate scientific information effectively in oral and written form using appropriate terminology and media.
