TESOL Certification The TESOL certification program provides additional career opportunities and an extended focus on internationalization for GGC graduates. By successfully completing a set of six courses, graduates will be able to teach English as a second or foreign language effectively to learners in foreign countries or in domestic intensive English program settings. Students will have a solid understanding of effective approaches to teaching English meaningfully, and help learners increase their awareness of linguistic properties in oral and written communication. Program Outcome Goals Students will thoroughly understand, articulate, demonstrate, and effectively evaluate: The fundamental models of second language acquisition theory and the teaching methods that are most flexible and effective in using such models The components and purpose of language instructional techniques and strategies as well as consideration for their application within the classroom The application of language learning and language teaching in the form of practical and sustainable lesson plans and activities in the classroom The location, creation, and adaptation of language learning materials and available technology for effective instruction’ Appropriate forms of assessment of language proficiency After completing the course, the TESOL Certification Students should be able: To plan effective instruction for students who speak English as a new language To integrate and utilize technology in the instruction of ESL students To differentiate the definitions and relationships between theory and method as they relate to TESOL To differentiate between first and second language learning and the relationships between first and second languages To describe common beliefs about developmental sequences of English language learning To identify the myths and misconceptions concerning second language learning and bilingual education To identify specific ways teacher position learners to language and teaching/learning activity To coordinate ESL instruction with subjects other than English for integrating content area concepts and skills into ESL classes To apply a variety of teaching/assessment approaches to inform instruction and align with national and international TESOL standards
