Students will also complete an electronic portfolio of assignments based on program outcomes as a capstone to completing the minor.

Students will be assigned an advisor after their enrollment in the minor and expectations of portfolio will be explained.  The advisor will monitor student’s progress in completing the portfolio.  The portfolio serves two purposes.  It is a collection of artifacts from student coursework that ideally should have benefits that extend beyond the classroom and should be useful for career or graduate school opportunities.  Secondly, it will be used as a tool for assessment.  While assessment is not required for minors, the African American Studies Committee feels this as an essential component of the program.  Assessment outcomes will be created based on the program goals (provided in Justification) and with the consultation of Tom Lily (Director of Assessment)

After completion of coursework for the minor (or final semester of enrollment before graduating), students will enroll in AFAM 4800 Portfolio Completion.  This course carries no hours of credit, and there are no tuition fees involved.  Grading is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory based on successful completion of portfolio that provides syllabi from course for minor and relevant artifacts from coursework.  Initially, members of the committee will serve as advisors.  Other faculty members throughout the college will be offered the opportunity to serve as an advisor; professionalization training will be designed in coordination with CTE.
