Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary field focusing on the complex interaction of gender with other identity markers, such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, and religion. Gender femininity and masculinityis such a basic form of social organization that its operation often passes unnoticed.  As an interdisciplinary study, our faculty employ a wide range of theoretical perspectives and methods for understanding gender roles across historical periods and in different cultural contexts. Courses associated with this minor address the concepts of gender and the body, gender and power, and gender and knowledge through a range of topics, such as freedom and liberty, social movements, masculinities, work and leisure, politics of social justice, intersectionality, colonial and sexual violence, and visual culture and citizenship.

Students who wish to minor in gender studies must take 15 hours of courses toward the minor.  There is one required course: GNDR 2000, which must be taken within two semesters of declaring the minor. Students must take an additional 12 credits at the 3000 level or above.  A grade of C or better is required in all courses counting towards the minor.
