Social Work Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

The minor in Social Work guides students in exploring the theory and practice of social work, developing academic knowledge and professional skills in providing human services to diverse or vulnerable populations, and helping individuals solve and cope with problems. Courses cover human development across the life span, interpersonal communication skills, and institutional settings for social work practice. Special emphasis is placed on social justice, service, and the importance of human relationships that center the dignity and worth of every individual. A minor in Social Work can help students improve the wellbeing of individuals and families, enter advocacy roles in non-profit organizations or government service, and position them to pursue graduate programs and professional licensure.

The Social Work minor requires 15 credit hours in Human Services and Sociology courses, with at least 9 required hours at the 3000/4000 level. A grade of “C” or better is required for all courses in the minor. HUSE 2000 is a pre-requisite for the other HUSE courses and, for students pursuing the minor, may also be used as a pre-requisite for the SOCI courses instead of SOCI 1101 or SOCI 1160. Human Services majors concentrating in Social Work are ineligible for the Social Work minor.
