Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

The Community Psychology Certificate allows undergraduate students to specialize in the area of grassroots community health, programming, and advocacy, including an examination of the impact of culture and diversity on best practices. Students will also gain experience developing and assessing models of change. The certificate, which is embedded within the psychology program, allows students to create an applied skillset useful in many fields as it combines elements of clinical and social psychology and focuses on making change from the bottom up.

The 22-credit-hour curriculum provides experience in methodology and hands-on program design through the psychology major’s core research methods class and a senior thesis field experience. Additionally, students will learn related material in health psychology, community psychology, clinical psychology, and culture and ethnic diversity. All courses take an intersectional approach and provide the opportunity to apply course content to real-world scenarios. Students completing the Community Psychology Certificate can engage with their communities, service agencies, and stakeholders at all levels.

Note: This certificate requires 3 credit hours of PSYC 1102 as a prerequisite to the courses in this certificate. Additionally, students outside the psychology major who have taken a different research methods course may be eligible for course substitution of this requirement. This is evaluated on an individual basis.
