Certificate Program Types: Stand-Alone vs. Embedded
Georgia Gwinnett College offers two types of certificate programs designed to meet diverse educational and career goals: stand-alone certificates and embedded certificates. While both types provide students with specialized knowledge and skills in targeted areas, they differ in structure, purpose, and eligibility.
Stand-Alone Certificates
Stand-alone certificates are designed to be completed independently of a degree program and are ideal for individuals who have already earned a bachelor’s degree or are seeking to enhance or shift their career focus. These programs provide intensive, focused training in a specific discipline and can serve as a pathway to graduate study or immediate workforce entry.
Stand-alone certificates are available to non-degree-seeking students as well as degree-seeking students, and may be completed on their own or in conjunction with other academic pursuits.

Embedded Certificates
Embedded certificates are academic credentials that are completed as part of an undergraduate degree program. They allow students to specialize in a particular field of interest without the need for additional coursework beyond the bachelor’s degree requirements. These certificates are “embedded” within a student’s existing curriculum and offer interdisciplinary or career-focused expertise that complements a student’s major.
Embedded certificates are available only to currently enrolled undergraduate students and are not awarded independently of a degree.
