Gerontology Certificate

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

The Gerontology Certificate is designed for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students to specialize in the interdisciplinary study of aging and the aging process, including an examination of the diverse social contexts for aging-related changes regionally, nationally, and internationally. The embedded undergraduate and post-baccalaureate certificate enables students interested in working in aging-related fields (such as social work, elder care, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, counseling, or human service administration) to enhance their knowledge and skillsets.

The 12-credit-hour fully online curriculum provides knowledge of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial developmental changes in late adulthood with an understanding of human service agencies, programs, and policies that serve and affect older adults. All courses take an interdisciplinary approach and provide the opportunity to apply course content to real-world scenarios. Students completing the Gerontology Certificate will be uniquely positioned to help improve the aging experience of older adults.

Note: This certificate requires 3 credit hours (PSYC 1102  , SOCI 1101  , or HDAS 2000  ) as a prerequisite to the 4 courses (12 credit hours) of this certificate.
