ENVS 4000 - Sustainable Development (3) Credit Hours Prerequisite: ENGL 1102 and ENVS 1102 Successful completion of this course will enable students to: 1) explain some central tensions within sustainable development (e.g., how people are increasingly disconnected from resources that support their materialized lifestyles), 2) discuss the three pillars of sustainability )social equity, environmental protection, and economic prosperity), 3) explain the growing importance of urban environmentalism and ways to ensure sustainable and equitable urban expansion, 4) assess the connections between socio-economic inequities and ecological crises, 5) recall the various challenges experienced within sustainable development (such as, providing clean water, reducing food insecurity, improving urban living conditions, and ensuring ecological resiliency), and 6) create materials to share with the broader public on an issue or problem that sustainable development seeks to resolve.
